I just recorded a little ditty for you all about blogging (I mean, I could have recorded hours and hours because I LOVE the topic) but I broke it down into 4 bit tips for starting your blog and gaining traffic.
I often get asked, “Should my business have a blog?” and the short answer is HECK YES! Why? Because it helps build your relationship with your readers, gain their trust, and it helps them see your sparkly personality. Win win, right? I’ve been blogging since 2009 where I started out on Blogger (…..*sings* started from the Blogger now we’re HERE)…. and then I transitioned over here to WordPress.org. I’m a bit in love. I even…dare I say…considered looking into SquareSpace, but alas, WordPress STILL wins. There’s just so much customizing that you can do on WordPress, it’s hard to beat!
Now, in the beginning of the podcast, you’ll hear me chat about different blogging platforms (obviously you know which one’s my favorite now) BUT you totally have other options. If you’re not looking into spending a bunch of time on setting up/learning the logistics of your blog, maybe you start on Weebly, Wix or SquareSpace. Totally up to you. But if down the road you’re going to want some bells and whistles, I strongly suggest starting on WordPress and avoiding the whole ‘move my blog’ hassle from the get-go.
SO! In this episode, we chat about…*drum roll please*:::
I always like to give you action steps, so make sure you have a pen and paper as you listen! Let’s dive a little deeper into each of these before you listen::: ( I break each of these down within the podcast)
WHY – people respond to your energy…not just the words you write. So, WHY are you starting a blog? WHY is it important you to/your business? The deeper means (vs. “because I like to write”) is usually what grabs your audiences attention and helps them fall in love with you QUICKER! I mean, they’ll already love you, right?! 🙂
WHO – Who is your blog for? Who is your target audience? Who do you desire to attract to your blog? THIS IS SO IMPORTANT so that you begin to use their language within your writing (whiles still sounding like yourself…is that an oxymoron?) EXAMPLE: If I have a blog about kittens wearing glasses, I’m not going to want to talk about a cool cheeseburger I ate once. Your readers want a common theme within your blog. If you’re a copywriter, your audience probably wants blogs about how to write better copy, etc., not a blog about how you stubbed your toe.
CONTENT – Now, after you’ve done your research about WHO your ideal reader is and WHY you’re doing what
you’re doing, it’s time to create some content that speaks YOUR SOUL to YOUR READERS. In the podcast, you’ll hear me talk about my love for mood boards. CLICK HERE TO VIEW SOME OF MY FAVORITES. A mood board is where your color scheme, typography, photo inspos come to hangout. A mood board shows you quickly if a picture you’re considering putting on your blog is a YES or a NO (aka, does it go well with your brand or not). Your blog should have a FEELING when your readers arrive. Is it girly? Goth? Hipster? etc. Pick 3 colors to start with and 2 fonts. Anything more than that in the beginning can be super overwhelming to your viewer. Then, remember what I said about WHO you’re talking to? Your content should match that!
WHERE – I. love. Private. Facebook. Groups. (click here to join mine!) They’re SO good for connecting, marketing, learning, growing your traffic, etc. Go to Facebook and search the groups tab for BLOGGING. There, you’ll find TONS of groups to join. OR, if you’re like me and wants a head start, check out some of my favorites::: Blogging Boost, Blog + Biz BFFs, Bloggers Supporting Bloggers, Creative Superheros. Then, after you’ve joined (tell ’em I sent ya), introduce yourself! Don’t be shy 🙂 connect with other bloggers, check out their blogs, and leave comments. Interaction and engagement is KEY to growth. YOU CAN DO IT!
