I work with a ton of new female entrepreneurs who are coming to me not having had their first client yet. The first question I always get is, “HOW do I find my first client?!”
I totally get it, girlfriend. The HOW’s, right?! HOW do I find my first client? HOW do I position myself as an expert? HOW do I _____?! Gah! It can be totally overwhelming. So I’m here to tell you EXACTLY how I attracted my very first client ever and how you can too!
Now, I have had this website for almost 9 years (um…whoa.) As I’ve transitioned my site towards my creative business, I did a TON of research. Seriously, years and years of research and I started to make my website something that converts for me (aka, make money). At the time of my peek research-ness, I had a job in marketing where I learned all about MailChimp. I had no idea what it was and had to be taught the in’s and out’s.
As I would send campaigns for work, I STILL DIDN’T REALIZE that this was a HUGE business tool I was missing. It wasn’t until Pinterest became a big obsession for me (ha!) and say “BUILD YOUR LIST BUILD YOUR LIST!” every where I looked. When I discovered what this meant, I realized I needed to jump on that train!
Building an email list of ideal clients means you have a pool of followers who ALREADY love your stuff and want more. Boom. So I began to build my email list ABOUUUUUT 7 years into having this website …… let that sink in for a sec. Sigh!
None the less, here we are!
So began to make freebies, host webinars, launched my podcast, etc., and my list started to grow. When I attracted my first client ever, my email list had MAYBE 200 people on it…mostly family and friends.
My email list is where my first client came from. I had been sending out little emails saying what I was doing, as well as inspiring stories, but I finally got confident enough to email out an offering to work together and BOOM, there came my first client.
Now, this wasn’t over night. I had years of website-ness out there, as well as nurturing my email list before offering a program to work with me. BUT, I wasn’t to demonstrate the importance of having an email list. MOST of my clients come to me after being on my email list (sometimes for over a year!).
If you’re in the spot of wondering where your clients are or you’re ready to attract your FIRST client, it all starts with doing research and knowing EXACTLY who you desire to serve, and figuring out WHERE they hang out. I know I know, that SOUNDS simple, but I get it! It can be hard! Click here to download my Attract Clients Webinar Replay.
